Who we are and What we do

About us

Indfrag – short form for Indian Fragrance – was started in 1989 in collaboration with Quest International’s facility in the South of France. We made fresh Flower Concretes and Absolutes for Quest and other French companies up till 1994.

We currently focus on manufacturing botanical extracts for the beauty industry. We also contract manufacture specific flavour ingredients for the food industry

We operate five manufacturing units of varying capacities in three sites which allows us the flexibility to supply extracts from milligram quantities to several tons to our customers’ specifications. We have a vast global network of raw Botanical suppliers developed over the past 28 years, ranging from Eastern Europe to places like Ghana, Madagascar and Indonesia. We currently supply our cosmetic active ingredients to leading brands and companies in the EU, North/South America and Asia.

Four of our factories are located in India, and one in Vietnam. We also have offices in India and Singapore with warehousing in India and France.

Green Chemistry

Green Chemistry Is based on a set of principles that helps to reduce or eliminate generation of hazardous substances. It enables us to protect the planet and improve the economy which in turn benefits the public.

Green Chemistry can be applied in the fields of design, development and implementation of chemical products and processes. Green Chemistry offers a strategic path way to build a sustainable future.

Principles of Green Chemistry

As mentioned by the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) of Untied States of America, the twelve principles of Green Chemistry are:

  1. Prevent Waste
  2. Maximize Atom Economy
  3. Design Less Hazardous Chemical Syntheses
  4. Design safer chemicals and products
  5. Use safer solvents and reaction conditions
  6. Increase energy efficiency
  1. Use renewable feedstocks
  2. Avoid Chemical Derivatives
  3. Use catalysts, not stoichiometric reagents
  4. Design chemicals and products to degrade after use
  5. Analyse in real time to prevent pollution
  6. Minimize the potential for accidents

Green Chemistry at Indfrag Biosciences

We at Indfrag Biosciences follow the principles of Green Chemistry and try to ensure all our process and products are adherent to it. Few of the steps/actions that we have taken to ensure them are:

  1. The solvent used in the production process is completely recovered and reused.
  2. The spent that is obtained after the completion of the process is dried to completely remove the traces of solvent and used as fertilizer.
  3. Effluent obtained from the plants undergoes a thorough treatment in an Effluent Treatment plant and is reused to water the surrounding greenery.
  4. Metal Scrap and HDPE drums are sent to recycle centres and traders to be reused again.
  5. Ash from the boiler is collected and given to farmers to be used as fertiliser.
  6. Efficient storage of raw materials, chemicals and solvents so as to minimize loss through leakages and contamination.

Future of Green Chemistry at Indfrag Biosciences

As we believe in continuously improving ourselves, we have outlined certain steps to be implemented in the future to ensure maximum compliance to the Green Chemistry principles and a sustainable future.

  1. Design energy efficient extraction processes in order to reduce the use of solvent.
  2. Ensure all chemicals and solvents are benign.
  3. Implement measures to reduce emission created during production.
  4. Use renewable feedstocks
  5. Improve the process to carry out reactions at low or ambient temperature.

Sustainability

We have integrated a sustainable sourcing program into several supply chains and made sustainability a part of our quality story. Our philosophy on sustainability is to effect improvements in biodiversity and stakeholder welfare by setting up a framework which will incentivise and enable the stakeholders to do so. We believe that a system is only sustainable if it is economically viable and run by individuals who realise that it is in their best interest to work in a sustainable environment. In our experience, supply chains that do not adhere to sustainable practices are untenable in the long run.

Thus, we do not provide charity but we provide a means to improve the long-term viability of a product. Our Charitable contributions are discussed in the CSR section.

Our approach is as follows

  1. Our strategy is to first gather accurate data of all the stakeholders in the supply chain. This is perhaps the most important part of our program as accurate data will give us indictors on
    • Social aspects
    • Environmental/Biodiversity aspects
  2. Partnering with appropriate NGOs who can understand the needs of the project and translate these needs to key Performance Indicators (KPIS). These NGO’s who will also perform audits on the supply chain as well as impact studies and baseline studies to monitor the performance and long-term viability of the program
  3. Setting up a framework for execution of the project in concurrence with our suppliers, NGO’s, Government bodies and our customers
  4. Running the program and providing reports to the stakeholders
  5. Adhere to the Nagoya protocol and its associated requirements

Using the above approach, we have had success as illustrated below
